This state-of-the-art complex comprises eight fully equipped operating theatres and a catheterisation laboratory. The site area available is a fan-shaped wedge of space located between existing theatres and a service block.

This location enjoys panoramic views over the Rondebosch Common to Table Mountain beyond. The design is characterised by a centralised setting-up zone, which exploits the panoramic views to the south and west, with a series of concentric bands of accommodation.

This allowed for the setting-up zone to be extended as an outer concourse around the perimeter, with the operating theatres as an inner bond, separated from the main corridor by a series of induction rooms. The inner circle accommodates recovery wards, a nursing station and a parents’ waiting room, opening onto a paved courtyard, which provides a measure of relief at the narrow point of the wedge. The new CPD located directly below the theatres has lifts and hoist connections to service the setting-up zone.
