CTIA Central Business Lounge

KMH Architects in association with Blueprint Architects created a new double storey facility inside the existing International Departures Lounge at Cape Town International Airport. The lower storey is on the holding lounge concourse level and accommodates a new restaurant.

The upper storey accommodates a new business class lounge which is accessed via a new lift and feature stair from the concourse. The innovative structural solution allowed the lift pit to be constructed over the functioning International Arrivals Passport Control Hall underneath and the floor of the business lounge to be pre-fabricated in modules which were able to be manoeuvred from the site camp outside through existing windows and assembled inside the terminal. This enabled the entire construction to be completed with no impact on the airport’s functions.

The result is a dramatic ‘glass box’ business lounge enjoying views down into the holding lounge concourse and out to the airfield and poised on a very light structure above a completely open restaurant below.
