Karl Bremer Emergency Centre & Records
The brief called for the construction of a new Emergency Centre (EC) and Medical Records facility. The new facility needed to provide an integrated and comprehensive emergency service to the Tygerberg northern substructure and surrounding areas, serving up to 160 patients a day.
A double-storey building was envisaged, with the Records Area situated on the lower ground floor and the New EC on the ground floor, allowing the EC to connect directly to the existing hospital via the existing south wing.
The compact nature of the plan is conducive for efficient patient management, reducing travel distance and optimizing supervision. The introduction of a glazed central courtyard serves as the fulcrum for the circulatory passages and becomes a focal point that allows patients to orient themselves.
The courtyard breaks the building’s deep footprint and provides ample natural light to the internal spaces. The modern façade treatment integrates seamlessly with the existing building by employing similar architectural elements, creating a plinth for the existing hospital.
